You are the nurse leader in a crucial conversation with a colleague. Apply active listening, empathy, open-ended questions and collaborative problem-solving. How far your colleague calms and opens up depends on how you lead the conversation.
1How it works
- Your role. Who you are and the facts you have, including what the complaint says.
- Your colleague. The label in the corner shows whether they are speaking or listening. When it says Listening, just talk. There is no button to press; pause for two seconds when you are done.
- Captions. What your colleague says, and what the microphone heard you say, appear here as you go.
- Hint and Pause. Hint gives one tactic from Crucial Conversations (two per conversation; you can also say “hint”). Pause stops the conversation and gives a quick progress check. The background sound can be turned off here too.
- Turns. Counts your turns. There is no set number: take the time you need, then press End & get feedback. It also ends on its own if you reach a genuine agreement.
- End & get feedback. Ends the conversation early and opens your evaluation report.
- Script. The whole conversation so far, in writing.
- After the conversation. You get an evaluation report. Read it, write your one-paragraph reflection, then download the script, report and reflection together to submit.
2Warm up optional
Talk with Jordan, a friendly charge nurse, for one minute. Nothing is scored. It checks your microphone and lets you get used to talking out loud and pausing to send before the real conversation.
3Choose your conversation
Before you start. This colleague is fictional. Never use the names of real coworkers,
patients or organizations. Your conversation is not stored on our servers; it stays in this browser tab
until you download it. Your browser sends your speech to its own speech-recognition service to turn it into text.
Use Chrome or Edge.
Before you begin
- Mistakes are welcome. She isn’t real. Try things and learn from what lands.
- The score is feedback. Your instructor grades what you submit. Hints and pauses are free.
- It stays here. Nothing is saved on our servers. Keep classmates’ conversations to yourself.
We believe that everyone participating in activities at BAYADA College of Nursing is intelligent, capable, cares about doing their best and wants to improve.
